Programmes that need uncrewed ground capability face an early fork: design a new vehicle, or convert a platform that already exists. Both routes are legitimate. The right answer depends on the mission, the timeline and the assurance burden — not on fashion.

What a new build buys you

A purpose-designed uncrewed platform offers a clean architecture: interfaces specified from the start, mass and power budgets set for autonomy hardware, and no legacy systems to characterise. The cost is time — design, prototyping and qualification all precede the first operational lesson.

What retrofit buys you

Retrofit starts from a vehicle whose mobility, reliability and logistics are already understood. Autonomy is added as an integration layer — drive interfaces, sensing, edge compute and supervision — in stages, with each stage tested before the next begins. Capability reaches the field earlier, and optionally crewed operation can retain a human fallback during transition.

Understand the platform, define the operating domain, design the safety controls, integrate in stages, test every assumption.

Choosing deliberately

The decision is ultimately about evidence. Which route produces assessable behaviour sooner, within the programme’s operating domain and safety case?
